A cold but Memorable start at Michener Park
On a chilly November afternoon at Michener Park in Red Deer, I had the opportunity to photograph an extended family session for a family I’ve known for years. I first met their daughter through a youth program we both attended. This session became the perfect chance to reconnect with her and the rest of the family after I moved church congregations. Getting an entire extended family together can be tricky, so we had to seize this opportunity while all the kids were in town for the weekend’s family celebrations. Despite the cold, their warmth and connection made the day feel inviting. It truly was the ideal spot for chilly family photos in Red Deer, creating memories that would last.

Planning for Success: Grouping Everyone Together
Extended family sessions can be quite a challenge, requiring more work and preparation than a typical shoot. To make sure we captured everyone, I took time before the session to check in with the family and create a list of groupings they wanted. This kept me organized and ensured I captured each family member individually and with one another. It was much like planning wedding party portraits—without the wedding! Though there was some controlled chaos, this planning made sure no one was left out. Consequently, it set us up for success in capturing those chilly family photos in Red Deer.

Staying Warm: Comfort Between Shots
The cold weather can be difficult for both the subjects and myself. To combat this, I wore a heated jacket and heated socks, which helped me stay comfortable while shooting. In between groupings, I made sure the family took breaks to warm up in their coats and or vehicles. This allowed them to stay comfortable and energized for the next round of photos. These short breaks made the chilly day more enjoyable, keeping everyone relaxed and enthusiastic. Ultimately, it helped us make the most of the chilly family photos in Red Deer despite the weather and cold conditions.

Connecting and Capturing Love: The Heart of the Session
As the session continued, it became clear that the family’s bond was as strong! Whether it was a hug or huddle between siblings or a laugh shared between parents, their connection was evident in every shot. Despite the cold, their warmth made each photo special. Their joy and love created a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere—exactly what you want when capturing family moments. This made the chilly family photos truly shine.

Cherishing Red Deer Family Moments: Reflections on a Perfect Day
In the end, this session reminded me of the importance of capturing family memories, no matter the season or what the weather brings. The photos we took on that chilly November day will be cherished for years to come. Thanks to thoughtful planning, timely breaks, and my trusty heated jacket and socks, we turned a frigid day into an unforgettable family experience. These chilly family photos in Red Deer now hold the warmth of their love and connection, preserved for future generations to come. And for this generation to enjoy.

A Special Thanks to the Pack Family
